TWO CASTLES UNVEILS EVEN MORE AFFORDABLE HOMES IN SOUTH LAKELAND

Two Castles Housing Association is furthering its commitment to the provision of affordable homes with a new development of high quality, sustainable properties at Grange over Sands in South Lakeland.

Higher Grange is a site of eleven, eco-friendly properties available for rent on Grange Fell Road, including two, two bedroom bungalows, five, two bedroom houses and four, three bedroom houses. Two Castles Housing Association has been working in partnership with Russell Armer Homes and South Lakeland District Council on the development and has received £780,000 funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) towards the scheme.

Rob Brittain, property services director at Two Castles Housing Association, said: “There is a high demand for affordable housing in South Lakeland where many people are being forced to move out of the area due to high prices in the marketplace – more than ten times the average salary - and the demand for second or holiday homes.

“Two Castles Housing Association is committed to providing high quality homes and we are delighted to have completed our work on Higher Grange. We recently launched our Harmony Hill development in the Milnthorpe area of South Lakeland and this new site at Grange over Sands further endorses our ongoing commitment to bringing much needed affordable homes in the local area.

The eleven homes will meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 - the national standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes. This includes a number of eco-friendly features, including energy efficient solar panels to provide hot water as well as compost bins and cycle storage.

Homes will also be built to the Lifetime Homes Standard, meeting specific design criteria to support the changing needs of individuals and families at different stages of life. Features will include wider hallways which are able to accommodate wheelchair use and appropriate space for the installation of a stair lift.

Rob added: “This particular site at Grange over Sands was identified by Russell Armer Homes, who became our appointed contractors on the scheme. Two Castles has also worked closely with South Lakeland District Council to identify people who are in the greatest housing need for these properties.”

Tony Whittaker, strategic housing and enabling team leader at South Lakeland District Council, said: "South Lakeland District Council is pleased to see the completion of these homes which make a valuable contribution towards meeting affordable housing needs in Grange over Sands."

Deborah McLaughlin, North West director of the HCA, said: “We know that the shortage of affordable housing in and around South Lakeland is a really important issue for local people. This is why we are pleased to provide funding for an environmentally friendly scheme such as this one that will undoubtedly have a strong positive impact on the local area.”

Two Castles Housing Association has a team of over 100 staff members and has offices in Carlisle, Kendal, Whitehaven and Newcastle. It owns and manages over 3,400 properties across the North and provides high quality and affordable homes for low cost home ownership or rent.
