ERIMUS: AFFORDABLE HOME BRINGS HAPPINESS

A COUPLE from a major regeneration area are the first residents to become home owners in a scheme of affordable new apartments.

Mary and Bert Lindo are the first people to move into Erimus Housing’s contemporary new apartments on its £9m St Paul’s scheme in Newport.

The couple moved from Middlesbrough Council’s Gresham regeneration area into their new home after viewing the development’s show home.

Now Mr and Mrs Lindo are the proud owners of a two bedroom apartment complete with ensuite to the master bedroom and a balcony with a view.

“I wanted to stay in the area and we had seen these being built,” said Mrs Lindo, 73. “We came to see them and the view took my fancy straight away.”

Mr Lindo, 76, added: “I am pleased we did it. When we came to look at them, I was quite impressed.”

The St Paul’s development hosts two apartment blocks, with each apartment playing home to two bedrooms with an ensuite to the master bedroom, as well as bungalows and houses.

The 24 unit apartment block, as well as 11 houses and one bungalow, are for affordable rent.

The 44 unit apartment block and remaining houses include a range of tenure options including shared ownership, which means buyers can purchase 50% or 75% of the property and rent the rest from Erimus Housing until they can afford to buy a further share.

A number of apartments are also available through the Government’s HomeBuy scheme. This scheme offers a 70% share in a home whilst the other 30% share is held as an equity share by the house builder and Government.

Buyers only need to pay a small interest payment on the 30% and the Government and house builder get their share back if they buyer sells the property and moves on.

Erimus Housing has also carried out modernisation work to its existing homes in the Newport area to bring them up to modern-day standards.

Edna Donnelly, Vice Chair of the Erimus Housing Board, is a fellow Newport resident and welcomed Mr and Mrs Lindo into their new home.

“This is the best thing to happen to this estate,” she said. “Ten years ago I wouldn’t have given this estate much hope.

“Now this and the other work that has been carried out has made it somewhere to be proud of again.

“It is town centre living at its best.”
