ARTS EVENT SHEDS LIGHT ON NEW HOMES

A new estate built by Coast &Country Housing to replace 36 pre-fabricated bungalows in Marske is to be illuminated with specially commissioned artwork.

Following a decision to redevelop the bungalows in East Meadows, Marske, Coast & Country Housing worked with children from Errington Primary School  Marske Library Reading Group and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council to create a written and photographic record of the community
As part of the project, the children worked with members of the Saltburn Artists Project to create a collage depicting scenes from their photographs and also showing a timeline of memorable events from 1947, when the original bungalows were built, to the present day.

Coast & Country commissioned artists Mags Hayden and Kathryn Wren to design a piece of artwork featuring the children’s ideas situated around the entrance to the newly built Meadowfields Close.

The artwork is built into a wrought iron fence and includes ‘light boxes’ which are sculpted to display the designs drawn by the children. The boxes contain solar lights that give a soft glow effect to the pillar.

To celebrate the completion of the artwork, Coast & Country organised an arts event at Bydales School on Wednesday. (Nov 19) Pupils took part in urban dance, juggling and glass mosaics workshops, while members of the Saltburn Artists Project displayed portfolios of their work.

Iain Sim, Chief Executive of Coast &Country Housing, said:  “There is a strong feeling of community at Meadowfields Close, and an ideal way of reflecting this was to create a piece of art involving local children that draws on the history of the community.

“The result is a strikingly individual piece of work which I am sure that all partners involved and the tenants at Meadowfields Close will be very proud of.

“Today’s event was a way to say thank you to those involved in the art project celebrate their fantastic work., and promote cultural heritage in the borough”
